Calhoun sits in the Ridge and Valley country of Northwest Georgia. Long limestone valleys run between shale ridges here, and the Oostanaula River cuts through the middle of it. The USDA soil survey maps about 227,300 acres in Gordon County. The two most common soils here are a shallow one over shale and a clay one on the hillsides. The shale soil often hits rock 10 to 20 inches down, on slopes that reach 70 percent. That is thin ground, and water runs off it fast.
Down on the river bottoms the problem flips. Those flats sit on almost no slope, and some hold water near the surface through winter and spring. The same survey rates about 45,000 acres of the county as occasionally flooded and about 4,600 acres as frequently flooded. Asphalt laid over soft, wet ground breaks up no matter how good the mix was.
The Calhoun weather station's 30 year normals show about 52 inches of rain a year. About 14 inches of that falls in winter, when lows average right at 32 degrees. Water in the base freezes and thaws at those temperatures. The National Asphalt Pavement Association calls standing water the leading cause of driveway failure, so grading comes first.
Calhoun's older streets run off Wall Street, which is US-41 through the middle of town. The city Street Department keeps up 103 miles of city streets, the sidewalks and the storm drainage system. Driveways on those blocks are short, and the tie-in at the walk and the curb has to sit flush. We keep the new surface level with the sidewalk and the garage slab.
The 2022 agriculture census counted 592 farms in Gordon County and 77,290 acres in farms. About 26,173 of those acres are pasture. Those places come with gravel drives of several hundred feet, farm lanes between fences and a turnaround by the barn. Gravel washes downhill here every time a hard rain comes through.
We pave over an existing gravel drive once the base is shaped and compacted, using our own paver and rollers. No more mud, no more dust. On a long lane that sees light traffic, tar and chip paving is worth asking about. It gives a hard surface with the look of a country road.
I-75 runs down the east side of Calhoun, and the business lots cluster around its exits. Exit 312 is the GA-53 interchange, with Belwood Road and the Calhoun Outlet Marketplace right off it. More lots sit along US-41, Red Bud Road and the GA-53 strip on both sides of the interstate. Those lots carry customer cars and delivery trucks all day.
Calhoun and Gordon County have made carpet and flooring since the cotton mills of the early 1900s. That left the town with plants, warehouses and distribution buildings, and each one has a truck court. A truck lane or dumpster pad carries much more weight than a car stall, so it gets a heavier section. We plan the work in phases with you so the business can stay open.
Where the surface is worn but the base is sound, an asphalt overlay costs less than tearing the lot out. Georgia DOT says widespread cracking in the wheel paths shows weak structure, and that overlaying it is not cost effective. Fresh striping goes back on after the paving. The Asphalt Institute says a low traffic lot should not need sealcoating for about 2 to 5 years.
It depends on which road your driveway meets. Inside the city limits, the Calhoun Street Department has a driveway and sidewalk permit application. Out in the county, Gordon County Public Works issues driveway permits and right-of-way permits. That office also sells the driveway culvert pipe that goes under a drive at the road ditch.
Gordon County also requires a driveway inspection before a new project gets an address. The Public Works office takes the application and hands out the marking flags. Ask them about your lot before any work starts, because the road owner sets the rules.
If your drive ties into a state route like GA-53, GA-156, US-41 or US-411, Georgia DOT controls the connection. Its rules say a permit is required before construction work or non-routine maintenance in the state highway right-of-way. We build to what the road owner requires. Anyone digging in Georgia calls 811 first, and so do we.
