Dalton sits on a valley floor with the long wall of Rocky Face Ridge to the west. The soils here weather out of cherty limestone, so chert gravel runs through the clay under your pavement. Some ground drains well and some stays soft, which changes how much base work a job needs. Add the carpet plants, and Whitfield County pavement carries more truck weight than most towns this size.

Dalton sits in the Ridge and Valley country, not the red clay Piedmont south of it. Rocky Face Ridge runs along the west side of town, cut by Dug Gap and Mill Creek Gap. Crow Valley opens to the north. Between the ridges the ground is valley floor, and that is where most of the paving happens.
Soils in this belt form over cherty limestone, and the USDA soil descriptions say so plainly. Chert gravel and cobbles can run from about 10 to 45 percent of a soil layer. On a job that means hard gravelly ground in one spot and soft clay ten feet away. We grade the site and build the stone base to match what is under it.
Water decides the rest. The Dalton weather station averages about 63 nights a year at or below freezing, per NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals. Water sits in a crack, freezes overnight and widens it. So the grading, the fall away from buildings and the pipe under a drive matter as much as the asphalt.
Dalton is the Carpet Capital of the World, with over 150 carpet plants in the area. Mills, warehouses and distribution buildings line I-75 and the Carbondale side of the county. Loaded trucks run in and out of them all day. A section built for car traffic gives out early under that load.
Highway engineers count traffic in 18,000 pound axle loads. That is the ESAL figure the Federal Highway Administration uses for pavement design. One loaded truck axle does far more to a surface than a car does. So a truck court or a dock apron gets a heavier section than the car stalls beside it. The estimate spells out the thickness, the base work and the square footage for your lot.
Dalton's commercial strips carry a different kind of work. Walnut Avenue is State Route 52, running east from I-75 exit 333. Cleveland Highway, Glenwood Avenue and Connector 3 carry more of the retail traffic. Shop lots, church lots and school lots break up at the entrances first, where trucks turn in. We plan the work in phases with you, and we do asphalt repair and patching as well.
It depends on which road you tie into. Inside the city limits, the City of Dalton Public Works Department handles street maintenance and right of way. It also issues the city driveway permit, and the form is posted on the city's own site.
Outside the city, Whitfield County takes over. The county Public Works Office issues right of way encroachment permits. Its divisions cover paving and pavement management, plus right of way maintenance. County roads reach most of Rocky Face, Varnell, Cohutta, Dawnville and Beaverdale. The county does not publish a driveway permit path online, so ask Public Works before the work starts.
State routes are the third case. Walnut Avenue and Cleveland Highway are both state routes, and US 41 and US 76 run through Dalton as well. Work inside a state highway right of way needs a GDOT permit, filed by the owner or an authorized agent. GDOT sets the widths, 14 feet minimum and 20 feet maximum for a residential drive in Georgia. Georgia law also requires a locate request before mechanized digging, so 811 gets called before we break ground.
Past the city limits the jobs change again. Whitfield County still has farms and big wooded lots around Rocky Face, Tunnel Hill, Varnell and Cohutta. Prater's Mill sits north of town on State Route 2, and Dawnville and Beaverdale are out that way. Driveways out there run hundreds of feet, sometimes farther, and often up a grade. Gravel on a grade washes down in a heavy rain, and the ruts come back soon after grading.
Paving a long drive puts a hard surface over that. No more mud, no more dust. The base and the fall to the ditches decide how it holds. We grade first, then put the stone down in layers before any hot mix goes on. Where a drive crosses a wet spot or a ditch line, the pipe goes in first.
For long, low traffic drives and farm lanes, tar and chip is worth asking about. GDOT calls it bituminous surface treatment and points it at low volume, low speed roads. It throws loose stone for the first few weeks. GDOT also warns against it where truck traffic is heavy. Shared drives, church roads and private subdivision streets get hot mix instead, and that is private road paving.
